Christ is Wisdom; Wisdom is Christ

The Book of Proverbs a book of wisdom. Proverbs 8 is where I have landed this week. What is wisdom? Wisdom is that which we are to learn from it:

knowledge

discretion

prudence

sense

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
and I find knowledge and discretion.”
Proverbs 8:12

O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense.
Proverbs 8:5

instruction

knowledge

Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. Proverbs 8:10-11

counsel

sound wisdom

insight

strength

I have counsel and sound wisdom;
I have insight; I have strength.
Proverbs 8:14

noble things

what is right

truth

Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, for my mouth will utter truth;
wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
Proverbs 8:6-7

righteousness

understanding

All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Proverbs 8:8-9

what is just

the way of righteousness

By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly. Proverbs 8:15-16

I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, granting an inheritance to those who love me,
and filling their treasuries.
Proverbs 8:20-21

So, why does wisdom seem such a far reach for me at times? Well, much of the time! It seems easier just to walk as the world walks which may include being wise, yet it is usually a worldly wisdom. But that is not my goal. I do not want to be as the world. I want to be as Christ. These verses (along with the entire Book of Proverbs) teach us what wisdom can teach us as well as what we might be learning from this world (thus should be walking away from).

The deep truth of this wisdom from God is that Christ is Wisdom.

And because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
Is 11:2

from Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Proverbs: “Wisdom here is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; it is Christ in the word and Christ in the heart, not only Christ revealed to us, but Christ revealed in us. It is the word of God, the whole compass of divine revelation; it is God the Word, in whom all divine revelation centres; it is the soul formed by the word; it is Christ formed in the soul; it is religion in the purity and power of it. Glorious things are here spoken of this excellent person, this excellent thing.”

The last half of Proverbs 8 tells all about Christ and wisdom:

22  “The LORD possessed (fathered/created) me at the beginning of His work, the first of His acts of old.

23  Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

24  When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.

25  Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, 26 before He had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world.

2 When He established the heavens, I was there; when He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when He made firm the skies above, when He established the fountains of the deep, 29 when He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, 30  then I was beside Him, like a master workman, and I was daily His delight, rejoicing before Him always, 31  rejoicing in His inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.

32  “And now, O sons, listen to Me: blessed are those who keep My ways.

33  Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.

34  Blessed is the one who listens to Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting beside My doors.

35  For whoever finds Me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD, 36  but he who fails to find Me injures himself; all who hate Me love death.” Proverbs 8:22-36

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:17-18

that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:2-3

Growing to know Christ better through reading His Word, the lessons taught by Wisdom show me the character traits of Jesus the Christ. They are of the One Whom I worship and adore. They are Him!

Lord, I pray that my mind and heart be open to You and the lessons which You desire to teach me. I want to know You better. I want to grow to be more like You while at the same time, this ‘Linda’ wants to diminish while You increase. I desire that Your character traits become such a part of me that when others look at me, they see You. I pray for the wisdom of the You, Lord. May Your Holy Spirit show me, grow me, guide me, guard me. Thank You for loving me, Lord. Thank You for drawing me to You as You teach me all about Yourself. I love You, Lord. In Your precious Holy Name I pray. Amen.

  1. Such an encouraging meditation, Linda! One of my favorite verses is in James where he encourages us that if we need wisdom, ask for it! And I love M.H.’s quote that wisdom is Christ revealed in us! So amazing! Blessings on your week!

Linda such a great post filled with wisdom from God’s Word. I love Proverbs 8 and have gone there often to study the characteristics of wisdom. I am so glad we can have this wisdom through Christ and his work in our hearts as we submit to that work and God’s Word! Thank you!!

  3. Linda, I so resonate with Proverbs 8, and truly, I want to be a woman of wisdom. I know this will only come as I spend time reading, meditating on, and applying God’s word. I so appreciate all the verses you shared that talk about wisdom! And your prayer . . . I definitely prayed that alongside you as I read. 🙂

I think, if you’re open, this post would be a great fit for the Tell His Story Linkup at my site. It would be an encouragement to others who share there.
