Diligence ~ One Word 2022 ~ April

“Diligence” ~ I have been pondering and doing diligence, being diligent. Amidst this word in the background of my days, I still am totally interrupted, taking me way off course. Yet, my days and weeks are orchestrated by the Lord.

But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
Psalm 31:14-15

I find that focusing on God’s Word using the “Sweeter Than Honey, A 365-Day Devotional Journey” by Patsy Burnette has been such a fine way to spend time in the Word daily. Not just five days a week but seven. Plus, I like Patsy’s daily place from which to jump off and into the Word. We are reading the Bible chronologically. Patsy shares space with daily readers on this Facebook page.

I have just completed Community Bible Study for 2021-22/online with a local group of women, studying “suffering” through the books of Job, James, 1 and 2 Peter, and, finally, Colossians. I did not enter the study until after Job and James were completed, but have the study books, planning to complete those over the summer. I have also signed up to join the next study in September for “Red Sea to the Jordan River” following the Israelites in the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers. Community Bible Study groups are all over the world. If you are interested, click on the link above to see about a group in your area.

My Bonnie-Girl, my tuxedo cat, my 14- year-old, 3 years ago adopted senior is gone from this earth. She died Tuesday, April 19th. I loved her so; she was my little buddy. She came into my life six months after Kenneth died. I was mourning the loss of my husband, as well as enduring COVID lockdowns and necessary cares and concerns for myself and others. Oh, my sweet girl.

In looking over OneWord prompts, I decided to look for quotes using “diligence” in them.

“Diligence like any other virtue in life can be developed if lost in the cause of time. One can start slowly and gain momentum on things that help in developing diligence.”
― Dr. Lucas D. Shallua

What we hope ever to do with ease, we must first learn to do with diligence.”
― Samuel Johnson, The Life Of Samuel Johnson, Vol. 4

Diligence overcomes difficulties; sloth makes them. Benjamin Franklin

Prefer diligence before idleness, unless you esteem rust above brightness. Plato

“I never could have done what I have done without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence, without the determination to concentrate myself on one subject at a time.” Charles Dickens

Ordinary people who faithfully, diligently, and consistently do simple things that are right before God will bring forth extraordinary results. David A. Bednar

Lord, please steer me along this journey of diligence in this earthly sphere, while I walk towards my eternal life. I am so grateful that You have given me this word along with some tools that teach me more about being diligent. Your desire may be to grow me more and more, so please show me the way. And…

Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for You have been my Refuge,
a Strong Tower against the enemy.
(Psalm 61:1-3)

In the Beautiful Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

  1. Linda, I am so sorry for your loss of Bonnie. It is so interesting how the Lord has led you to two Bible Studies as you learn about diligence. He surely knows how to fill the needs in our lives. Thank you for sharing the quotes on diligence. The David Bednar and Henry Cloud ones are so good. Praying for the Lord to continue to fill your life with all you need!

  2. Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear that Bonnie has passed. 😦 I know she was such a comfort to you, and you to her.

I appreciate you sharing these quotes on diligence. It’s a trait I want to continue to foster in my own life as well! Blessings to you as you grieve your loss, sweet friend.

  3. Linda, I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved cat. I said good-bye to my beloved dog, Golda almost 3 years ago now, but I miss her terribly every day. May the God of all comfort continue to comfort your heart.
I enjoyed the quotes on diligence you included here; they help me view diligence from many angles.

  4. Oh Linda, I am so sorry to hear of your Bonnie-Girl. Our Coco was run over on March 15th – his first birthday was on April 19th. My heart aches for you: Coco was (and still is) knit into our hearts and it sounds like Bonnie Girl is knit into your heart too. Hugs from afar!!

I had the most amazing experience the night before Coco got run over and because of that I am just so sure I will see him again. I long to share this with you too and pray it comforts your hearr.

    This is what unfolded:

God had me in the story of Ruth and Boaz and I felt Him showing me how precious it is to Him when we lie down at His feet in absolute abandon and surrender just as Ruth did before Boaz. As He was speaking that to my heart, Coco came up and stretched his while body out at my feet. I cried as I felt Jesus say to me: Anna, that wave of love overwhelming you for Coco right now is what I feel when you do the same for me: laying your whole body down at my feet. That very next morning I was called by the animal ambulance with the news he had been run over. And this verse was my verse of the day to pray over:

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
    Psalms 34:18 NASB1995

And this was the NIV verse of the day that dropped into my inbox half an hour after I got the call:

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” JOHN 14:1-3

    1. Oh, Anna. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I have always favored Ruth’s beautiful ways. And this additional blessing of you, Coco, and our merciful God all wrapped as a gift to me just humbles me more. I am so very sorry for your loss as well, Anna. These sweet furry buddies are so dependent, so loving, such little sweet friends in ways all their own.
      Loving you, ~ linda

      1. Yes, they are, aren’t they? Thank you for your condolences too, Linda. My little sister is a Ruth: my Mum gave birth to her in Germany and wanted her name to give God thanks for the friendship she had met in Germany, when she missed her own family so very much. If she had been a boy, Mum would have called her Jonathan – another beautiful friend in the Bible.

Oh may Jesus now surround you now too with that friendship in Him, as you miss your family who has gone to be with Jesus. May Jesus reveal His glory to you – His inherent and intrinsic worth – through the friendships He hems you in with to lead you to the spacious places of His heart for you.
